01 — ABOUT FREEMEDIPEDIA

We catalogue freedom itself.

FreeMediPedia started in 2012 as a weekend wiki of three librarians. Today it is the largest human-curated index of freely licensed media — every file checked for license, source and reusability.

No adsCommunity ownedOpen APIVerified licenses

We believe culture should not expire behind paywalls. From NASA space photos to 1920s jazz, from bird calls in Amazonia to medieval manuscripts — if it is free, we document it, preserve it and teach you how to reuse it legally in your film, school, startup or meme.

🔍 Verify

Every upload is checked by 2 reviewers for copyright traps.

05 — FAQ
Ask the librarians
What is free media, exactly? +
Free media means you can use, study, copy and remix the work for any purpose, with at most attribution or share-alike. Think CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 and public domain. If it says “non-commercial only” or “no derivatives”, we don’t list it as free.
Can I use files commercially on YouTube or in ads? +
Yes — for CC BY, CC BY-SA and public domain. Just credit the author, link the license and note changes. Our attribution generator creates the exact caption to paste in your description.
How is this different from a search engine? +
Search shows anything, including stolen work. We verify source, author consent, and license chain. Every file has provenance, hashes and mirror links.
I found my photo here without permission. What now? +
Use the takedown form in contact. We freeze the file within 24h, investigate, and remove or restore with full log transparency.
How do I cite FreeMediPedia in school? +
Cite the file author + license + file page URL. Example: “Photo: A. Rivera, CC BY-SA 4.0, via FreeMediPedia”. Teachers get printable packs in the Classrooms section.
